Locksmith Guide to Woolloomooloo: Wharf Units, Terraces and Lanes

A local locksmith's guide to Woolloomooloo: finger wharf apartments, public and private housing, old terraces and harbourside venues, and the lock jobs we do most.

8 min read

Woolloomooloo sits at the bottom of the hill below Darlinghurst and Potts Point, between the Domain and the harbour. It is a short drive from our Bourke Street workshop in Surry Hills, down William Street or through the back streets past the Australian Museum.

It is a small suburb with a surprising mix of buildings: the converted finger wharf with its apartments and restaurants, older terraces, public housing blocks, newer apartment buildings and a handful of pubs and cafes. This guide is a locksmith's view of Woolloomooloo and the jobs we do there most. For service details, see our Woolloomooloo locksmith page.

The building stock

The finger wharf and harbourside apartments

The finger wharf is one of Woolloomooloo's landmarks. Like most large residential buildings, it has secure entries, managed common areas and individual lot doors. Nearby harbourside buildings follow a similar pattern. Lockouts, rekeying after a sale and lot door repairs are the most common jobs here.

Older terraces

Pockets of nineteenth century terraces survive in the streets between Cathedral Street and Bourke Street. They share many features with terraces in Surry Hills and Paddington: timber doors, old mortice locks, rear yards and narrow side access.

Public and community housing

Woolloomooloo has a large share of public and community housing. Lock work on these properties is usually arranged through the housing provider or its maintenance contractors. If you are a tenant with a lock problem, contact your provider first. We can still help in an emergency lockout, with proof that you live there.

Newer apartment buildings

Newer buildings add secure lobbies, swipe or fob access, car parks and fire-rated lot doors. The building's management controls the common areas, while lot owners control their own doors.

Pubs, cafes and harbourside venues

Venues along Cowper Wharf Roadway and the surrounding streets trade late and see heavy use of their doors. Rear and service doors take a beating, and staff turnover makes key control important.

The lock jobs we do most in Woolloomooloo

Apartment lockouts

Most lockouts we attend in Woolloomooloo are in apartment buildings. Lot doors are usually self-latching, so stepping out to the corridor without a key is all it takes. Our lockout service aims to open the door without damage, and we check ID that links you to the address before we start.

Rekeying after a sale or move

New owners and tenants should not have to wonder who still holds a key. Rekeying the lot door, mailbox and any private storage locks makes every old key useless. See lock rekeying.

Repairing worn terrace locks

Older terraces often have locks that are worn, sticky or hard to deadlock. Many can be serviced and kept. Others are better replaced with a modern deadlock in a finish that suits the door.

Venue and small business locks

Late-night trading puts doors under strain. We repair closers, replace worn cylinders and rekey after staff changes. See our commercial locksmith service.

Apartment buildings: who looks after what

In Woolloomooloo's apartment buildings it helps to know which locks are yours.

  • Your lot door is the responsibility of the owner, or of the landlord if you rent.
  • The lobby, car park, gym, pool and other common doors belong to the owners corporation and are managed by the strata or building manager.
  • Fobs and swipe cards for common areas are issued by building management, not by a locksmith.
  • Mailbox locks are usually the owner's responsibility, but check your by-laws.

If a common door is faulty, report it to the building manager. If your own lot door is faulty, contact your agent or arrange a repair yourself if you own the unit.

Our guide to apartment security covers these points in more detail.

If you are locked out of a Woolloomooloo apartment

  1. Stay calm and stay safe. If you feel unsafe, move to a well-lit public area.
  2. Check for a spare key with a partner, flatmate, neighbour or your agent.
  3. Think about building access. If you are outside the lobby, we will need someone to let us in. The concierge, building manager or a neighbour can help.
  4. Have ID ready. A driver licence, lease or a bill showing the address helps us confirm you live there.
  5. Call us on 02 3820 5414. Tell us the building name, the street and your floor.

Terraces in Woolloomooloo

The surviving terraces have the same strengths and weaknesses as terraces elsewhere in the inner east.

  • Front doors often have an old mortice lock or nightlatch and nothing else. A modern deadlock is a worthwhile addition.
  • Rear doors into small yards are often weaker than the front.
  • Side and rear gates should lock with a key and be hard to climb.
  • Windows reachable from the yard or a neighbouring roof should lock.

See our guide to deadlock vs deadlatch for help choosing the right lock.

Typical Woolloomooloo jobs, step by step

A lockout on the wharf

A resident steps out to take rubbish to the chute and the lot door latches behind them. Their phone is inside. A neighbour lends a phone and calls us. The concierge lets us in, we confirm the resident's identity with the building manager, and we open the door without damage.

A new owner rekeying everything

After buying an apartment, a new owner wants certainty about keys. We rekey the lot door and mailbox, cut a set number of keys and note the key details for future copies.

A pub's rear door

A pub's rear door does not latch reliably after the closer is damaged. We replace the closer, adjust the strike and replace a worn cylinder, then rekey it to match the other back-of-house locks.

Parking and access

Woolloomooloo's streets are narrow and parking near the wharf and venues can be difficult. When you call, tell us:

  • The building name or street address.
  • Whether there is a concierge, intercom or loading area.
  • Your floor and unit number.

That helps us reach you quickly and avoid waiting outside a locked lobby.

Security habits for Woolloomooloo residents

  • Carry your key whenever you leave the unit, even for a moment.
  • Do not prop open lobby or car park doors, even when moving furniture.
  • Leave a spare key with someone nearby you trust.
  • Report faulty common doors to the building manager straight away.
  • Rekey when you move in, so you know who holds keys.

Common questions from Woolloomooloo clients

Can you get into my building if the lobby is locked?

We need someone to let us in. A concierge, building manager or neighbour can open the lobby. We do not bypass building entry systems.

Can you program my building fob?

No. Fobs and swipe cards are managed by the building. Contact your strata or building manager for a replacement.

I live in public housing. Can you change my locks?

Lock changes on public and community housing are usually managed by the housing provider. Contact them first. In a genuine lockout we can help you get back inside, with proof you live there.

Can you rekey my mailbox?

Yes. Mailbox locks are small cam locks, and most can be rekeyed or replaced quickly. It is worth doing whenever you rekey your lot door, because mail often contains the personal details someone needs to steal your identity.

Do you charge more for late calls?

Our call-out rates can vary with the time of day and the urgency of the job. We will give you a clear price on the phone before we travel, so you can decide before any cost is incurred. See our guide to locksmith costs in Surry Hills and Sydney.

What if my key snaps in the lock?

Do not try to dig the broken piece out with a pin or knife, because that can push it further in and damage the pins. Leave the door as it is and call us. In most cases we can extract the broken key, check the cylinder and cut a new key on the spot.

Harbourside conditions and your locks

Being close to the water brings one problem inland suburbs see less often: salt air. Over time it corrodes exposed cylinders, hinges, gate latches and the springs inside older locks, particularly on doors and gates that face the harbour or sit in open breezeways.

Signs a lock is suffering include:

  • A key that turns stiffly or only after jiggling.
  • White or green deposits around the keyway or on the handle.
  • A latch that sticks and does not spring back by itself.
  • Rust on screws holding the lock or strike plate in place.

The answer is usually regular servicing rather than replacement. We clean and lubricate the cylinder with a product suited to locks, replace corroded screws with stainless steel, and adjust the strike so the bolt does not drag. Where a lock has corroded badly, we can fit a replacement with a marine-grade or stainless finish that will last longer in the conditions. See lock repair for more on what servicing involves.

Keeping control of keys in a small suburb

In a small, close-knit suburb, keys often end up with cleaners, carers, tradespeople, dog walkers and friends. That is convenient, but over the years it is easy to lose track. A simple habit helps: write down who holds each key, and when someone no longer needs one, ask for it back. If you cannot account for every key, rekeying is a quick and inexpensive way to start again.
